Google didn’t set out to replace Windows or macOS. It’s happening anyway, and most users haven’t noticed.
The shift is incremental enough that it’s easy to miss. A few years ago, launching a desktop app to write a document, edit a photo, or join a video call felt normal. Now, for a significant portion of knowledge workers, the browser tab is the app. Figma, Notion, Linear, Slack’s web client, Google Docs - none of these require installation. Some actively resist it. And they’re not worse for it.
What’s changed isn’t just the capability of web technologies like WebAssembly and WebGL, though both have expanded dramatically what runs in a browser tab. What’s changed is user expectation. People don’t distinguish between “the web version” and “the real version” the way they did in 2015. If it opens in Chrome and does what they need, the conversation ends there.
Chrome’s Structural Advantage
Chrome holds somewhere around 65% of global desktop browser market share, depending on the measurement source. That dominance isn’t just a distribution win - it shapes how web applications are built. Developers test in Chrome first. Performance quirks in Safari or Firefox become secondary concerns. When Google ships a new API or capability to Chrome, it effectively becomes available to the majority of users immediately, whether the other browsers adopt it or not.
This is how browser monopoly quietly becomes platform monopoly. Not through acquisition or contractual lock-in, but through market mass. The browser becomes the runtime, and Chrome becomes the de facto standard for that runtime.

What This Actually Threatens
Microsoft feels this more acutely than Apple. The value proposition of Windows has always been partly tied to application compatibility - the idea that Windows is where serious software runs. As serious software migrates to the browser, that argument weakens. Windows 11 exists; people use it; but the operating system layer increasingly resembles infrastructure that boots Chrome rather than a platform with inherent value.
Apple has some insulation here because its hardware-software integration creates reasons to stay in the ecosystem beyond application access. iMessage, Handoff, AirDrop - these are OS-level features that browser apps can’t replicate. Microsoft’s equivalent hooks are considerably thinner.
The Part Nobody Regulates
Antitrust pressure on Google has focused almost entirely on search and ad markets. The browser’s role as an emerging application platform has received comparatively little scrutiny. That’s a gap worth watching, because the consolidation happening there is structural - and by the time it’s legible to regulators, it may already be complete.
